The Web 3.0 Devolution

Posted May 30, 2008

Today on LinkedIn, I discovered a question titled "How do you define Web 3.0?" and my stomach turned. Are we really going there? Has mankind fallen so far as to need a consumer friendly buzz word for everything we do?

I'm guilty of mocking buzz word heavy web sites and blogs for using the words Web 2.0, and just as guilty of sprinkling sales meetings and client conversations with the same term, touting Web 2.0 as the magical solution to customer needs.

The truth is, the web is just the web. We simply use the term Web 2.0 to communicate that we're doing something "new", or that we've found new ways of doing something old.

Jeffrey Zeldman wrote a great article over at A List Apart that sums up my thoughts on the subject, he hit the nail on the head in my opinion.

I hope the term Web 3.0 doesn't catch on, and we can all embrace the fact that the internet, being organic, global, and growing as fast as it is, will continue to grow and spawn new ideas every day, everywhere.

Let's just call it the web.

Amen to that! It took me several years before I could type the words 2.0, and I can't believe we're now looking forward and trying to classify it again.

Eras like the Industrial Revolution needed labels, because they were fundamental, long term shifts. But shifts and development in how we use technology that already exists just don't qualify in my book..

Ha! I totally agree.

I would tend to disagree with you on this one. Web 1.0 and 2.0 mean two very different things: static web versus dynamic web.

The dot-bomb era was the near death knell of the internet, however; we [designers, web developers, et al] realized quickly that the web far from over.

We came from an era where every one was in a rush to get their dotcom into IPO status that they forgot completely about the consumers.

Today, we have user-generated content, i.e., Flickr, YouTube, etc., that puts the web in the hands (and in the control of) the very same people we ignored back in the early part of this century.

Sure, many of us are monetizing on buzz words, like Web 2.0, mashups, blogs; but the reality is, our users are the one reaping the benefits of our (and their) labors.

Now, Web 3.0, aka Semantic web IS the next generation of our medium.

What we create today will only pave the way for the Web's future.

My two cents.
